Service Opportunities 2019-20

“Addressing poverty by connecting the community to existing resources and removing barriers to accessing healthcare and food.”

*****Junior League members who volunteer for any of these events to fulfill approved Community volunteer requirements for the League, please email Tina Dillow (tina.dillow822@yahoo.com) or Franny Apel (apel1104@yahoo.com) after you have completed your shift to log your hours.*****

Reminder:

  • ACTIVE Members are required to log 3 hours of approved Community volunteer service

  • NEW Members are required to log 3 hours of approved Community volunteer service

Volunteer Etiquette:

1)      JLRV volunteers should hold themselves to the same standard as they do in the workplace.

2)      If you find that you can no longer fulfill your commitment because of another unforeseen event, you should:

  • Find a reliable replacement.
  • Contact Annah Sullivan [annahsullivan@gmail.com] or Franny Apel [apel1104@yahoo.com or (336) 837-9128] as soon as possible.
  • Contact the volunteer coordinator for event regarding your replacement as soon as possible.

3)      For your volunteer commitment:

  • Be on time or a few minutes early in case there are any special instructions for your shift.
  • Make sure you are dressed appropriately to work your shift. You may need to find out what you should wear ahead of time.  When in doubt, wear your JLRV shirt.
  • Give your best effort when doing the work you have been assigned to do. Remember, especially when you are volunteering, you represent the JLRV!

FLEX VOLUNTEER HOURS!!!

NEW!  Flexible volunteer opportunities on YOUR schedule!  League members no longer have to complete a single three hour spot job!  Instead, volunteer for a TOTAL of three hours through one or more of our approved Community Partners over the course of the League year!  Help unload food at the Presbyterian Community center for half an hour in November, then help out in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation office with paperwork or copies for an hour in December. . . Just volunteer for a TOTAL of three hours.  The possibilities are endless! Contact the organizations to set up a time to volunteer on your own schedule. Then email Tina Dillow with the amount of time you volunteered!

  • Feeding America Southwest Virginia: https://www.faswva.org/home/volunteer/

  • Presbyterian Community Center:  Afternoons preferred; please coordinate your volunteer commitment two days in advance.  Contact Cheryl Poe at volunteers@pccse.org or (540) 537-4142.  Volunteers may help in the food pantry with pricing, stocking, or loading groceries for clients, or caseworkers with office work such as filing, alphabetizing, and other miscellaneous tasks.

  • Rescue Mission of Roanoke:  With the mission statement “helping hurting people in Jesus’ name,” the Rescue Mission of Roanoke is a comprehensive crisis intervention center for men, women, and children. The Rescue Mission offers life-saving services aimed at transformation and restoration.
