Vision Statement
The Junior League of the Roanoke Valley has selected childhood health and welfare as our community focus, identifying this area within our community as a critical need. Our membership will work through advocacy, education, fundraising, and partnership with existing programs and community organizations to improve the lives of children in the Roanoke Valley.
2009-2010 Project Development Grant Recipients:
Second Harvest Food Bank/Boys and Girls Club: Second year of a 2-year grant to fund the backpack program, which provides healthy, nutritious food for easy preparation at home on weekends and school vacations.
TAP Head Start: Grant funds Family Fun Nights that teach parents how to become models for their children making healthy dietary choices through a variety of activities and stations.
Young Audiences of VA: Grant funds Early Childhood Family Arts and Creativity Evenings for area families, targeting the kindergarten grade level and focusing on developing and enhancing pre-reading skills.
2009-2010 Community Opportunity Grant Recipients: Greenvale School: Funds security system upgrade to install push button locks on main doors.
Roanoke Area Ministries (RAM): Funds Emergency Aid Program to assist families with children.
Total Action Against Poverty (TAP): Funds Phase One of playground project at the Transitional Living Center.
2009-2010 Care That Counts Grant Recipients:
Apple Ridge Farm: Funds will assist in underwriting the tuition expenses of two children for summer camp.
Presbyterian Community Center: Funds will subsidize the participation of 50 low-income children in Across Ages and Fund in Fitness initiatives of the Pathways for Youth afterschool program. Salvation Army: Funds will be used to subsidize tuition for 50 sutdents and fully fund transportation costs for afterschool programming for school age children living in homeless shelteres in Roanoke.
YMCA Magic Place: Funding will be used for tuition for 24 children to attend 10 weeks of summer camp.
2009-2010 Community Committee Placements:
Foundations of Leadership: Working in conjunction with William Fleming High School and The Batten Leadership Institute at Hollins University to engage 18 young women in a leadership program. Healthy Kids: Second Harvest Food Bank/Boys and Girls Club provide backpack food to children for weekend meals. This committee also works on education for better nutrition and exercise programs in combination with the AJLI Kids in the Kitchen Initiative.
TAP: Working with the TAP Head Start Program to provide family fun nights focusing on educating parents to become models for healthy lifestyle habits.
Young Audiences: Working with Young Audiences of VA to provide family fun and creativity evenings for area families, with a special focus on kindergarten grade level pre-reading skills.
Junior League of Roanoke Valley, Virginia, Inc. (JLRV) Project Development Grant The JLRV supports innovative community projects (in line with the JLRV mission) that allow financial and volunteer participation by JLRV for one to three years. Both financial and volunteer support from JLRV can change on an annual basis. Project Development Grants are: - Awarded by the JLRV annually
- Given to organizations in order to fund a long-term project with the potential to be self-sustaining
- Given to organizations/projects that support the mission of the JLRV
- Able to provide the JLRV with enriching volunteer opportunities
- Contingent upon a 2/3 vote by the JLRV active membership at March 2010 membership meeting
Organizations currently receiving Project Development Grants are eligible to apply. Requests for “Volunteers Only” are also accepted and must meet the same criterion as financial requests; in addition to three JLRV members indicating interest in participating as volunteers. Request cannot exceed $50,000.
